The department was created in 1985 at the Ukrainian Institute of Engineers of Water Economy as a Department of Building Materials. The doctor of technical science, professor LEONID I. DVORKIN is the founder of department. In 1990 the specialty "Technology of building constructions and materials" was opened at the department, on which studies about 250 students. Professorial staff of department includes 2 doctors of science, professors and 10 candidates of science, associate professors. At the department graduate school are works.
The laboratory base of department is presented by the educational laboratories of building materials, technology of binders and concrete. There is also a center of testing of building materials and research laboratory.
Educational work of department is conducted on professional courses of Technology of building materials, in particular the "Technology of binders", "Processes and vehicles in production of building materials", "Technology of concrete", "Technological processes and production of reinforced concrete constructions", "Bases of technology of wall ceramic materials", "Planning and reconstruction of factories of building industry", and also the general technical course "Basics of building materials science". The department manages qualification planning, educational and production practices.
Research and scientific work of department is executed on a problem the "Economy of resources in technology of binders and concrete and development of effective building materials with the use of local raw material and wastes". - Development of the systems of methods of proportioning of concrete mixtures with given properties.
- Technology of effective building materials with using of industrial wastes.
